The Oude Warande, Vredelust, the Blaakbos, the Reeshofbos, the outlying area southwest of the city: Stadsbos013 is an area of meadows, farms, forests and parks, connected by bicycle paths, highways, hiking trails and a maze of dedicated mountain bike trails
Groeituin013 is a great place to be. Two years ago, the garden moved to the Reeshofdijk, which provided more space. Seasonal vegetables grow here and are for sale in the garden store. Gardener Theo Sanders is proud of the tomato project, “We grow unfamiliar varieties, from cherry-sized to football-sized. Auberge de Bonheur even had a special dish with our tomatoes last year.” Organic cultivation and care for people and animals are essential. Because organic seeds are often lacking, the garden is working on its own organic seed bank for tomatoes, peppers and garlic. This is how they distinguish themselves with special vegetable varieties.
The garden will change considerably in the coming years. There will be a food forest, the temporary shelters of the office and store will make way for an authentic Flemish barn, and a hortus biodiversicus - including a pond, a worm hotel and medicinal, cosmetic and culinary herbs - is also planned.
A few kilometers away, on the other side of the railroad and Bredasweg, lies dairy farm Nieuwelijn. Signs along Gilzerbaan invite cyclists and motorists to the Melktap013, part of the dairy farm, where they can fill their own bottles with loeiverse milk. “Unprocessed, just filtered, stirred and cooled,” says farmer's son Jari Swolfs. The tap was installed a year ago. “The bulk of Nieuwelijn's milk goes - hup - into the refrigerated trucks towards Campina. “We run this business with great heart for nature, people and animals.
At Nieuwelijn, in Stadsbos013, you see a typical Dutch picture with vast green fields and various breeds of cows such as Holstein Friesian, Jersey and Brown Swiss. The cows graze on clover-rich pastures, which is good for their health and milk production. Jari, the owner, dreams of selling milk directly to Tilburgers, expanding the assortment with cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese, and selling meat packages in the region. Collaboration with local entrepreneurs is paramount, to not only experience but also taste the area.
