Bach modestly called these six works ‘Concertos with various instruments’, but they brilliantly showcase his boundless creativity and joy in composing for orchestra. Each concerto has a unique scoring, length, style and atmosphere, with bold combinations that were unprecedented in his time. For instance, horns are given a virtuoso solo role, something never before seen. There is a concert featuring the surprising combination of trumpet, recorder, oboe and violin, alongside works for strings only or even low strings only. Solo violin, harpsichord, traverso and recorders also come together in wonderful ensembles. The Brandenburg Concertos show Bach's mastery and remain irresistible. All the more special to experience them in their entirety this season, in which Ton Koopman turns 80 and Amsterdam Baroque celebrates its 45th anniversary.
