Sunday concert at the Cenacle

Once again this season the Music Events Foundation Tilburg, in collaboration with Het Cenakel, is hosting a series of six chamber music concerts and four special recitals with master pianists on ten Sundays in the beautiful old chapel of Het Cenakel. New in both series an extra concert in April for Young Talent.

We start this season with the Ysaÿe Trio, founded in 2006, consisting of Rada Ovcharova (violin) Emlyn Stam (viola) and Willem Stam (cello). Their first CD appeared in 2013 with recordings of trios by Ysaÿe and Beethoven. These recordings were praised for their rich sound. A second CD, along with pianist Hanna Shybayeva, followed in 2014. The trio is also often heard with guest musicians including flutist Felicia van den End, oboist Pauline Austria, clarinetist Charles Neidich and cellist Dmitry Ferschtman. The Ysaÿe Trio has taken chamber music master classes with Eberhard Felz, Arnold Steinhardt, Valentin Erben, Hatto Beyerle, Istvan Parkanyi and Vladimir Mendelssohn.

On Sunday, Oct. 13, this trio will first play works by Hungarian composer, pianist and conductor Ernö Dohnányi (1877-1960). The very beautiful serenade for string trio, Op 10 (1902), consists of five extremely fine movements, full of virtuosic stylistic ideas. In the first movement (“Marcia”) Dohnányi presents the main theme simultaneously with its inversion, in the “Romanza” the accompaniment gives the listener a sense of metrical disorientation. It is the very simple but witty chromatic theme that makes the 'Scherzo', in frivolous vivace style, so appealing. The fourth movement shows the composer's enormous talent for writing variations on a delightfully archaic theme in an incredibly compact time frame. A brilliant finale in rondo form brings the work to a triumphant conclusion.

Admission per concert is € 18.00. For children 12 years and older and students, admission is € 10.00 per concert. Both include coffee/tea. For children up to 11 years admission is free.
