Southeast of Tilburg, we find Moerenburg. A nature reserve with quite a few unique qualities. How about a wide variety of animals and plants, rare natural phenomena and the thickest tree in Tilburg?
Moerenburg has an important place in the history of Tilburg. In 2005, during excavation work on the site of the water purification, the remains of Huize Moerenburg were found. This estate was one of the first three stone houses in Tilburg. Fortunately, it did not remain with those three houses. On the spot where the house once stood, a steel construction has now risen. Here you can literally take a step into the past of Moerenburg.
Moerenburg is full of special plants and animals. Of the nearly 1200 plant and animal species you can find there, several are unique to North Brabant and some even to the Netherlands. Furthermore, in the spring you will find rather rare seepage craters created by the bubbling groundwater. Moerenburg is also home to the thickest tree in Tilburg. This Canadian poplar has a trunk thickness of 165 centimeters and a height of over 30 meters. Plant lovers can discover a variety of species in this area with fun names such as: knotweed fountainweed, threadwort, hartsparrow and large bladderwort.
Moerenburg is pre-eminently an area for fanatic and occasional walkers. Of the approximately 200 hectares, 20 hectares have recently been arranged as new nature, new trails have been built, barriers removed and the Voorste Stroom meanders again in abundance. We don't want to give too much away. So go out and discover Moerenburg for yourself!
Outside the valleys of the Oude and Nieuwe Leij and Voorste Stroom you will find on both sides of the Korvelse Waterloop another small-scale landscape with beautiful pollard willows. Van Gogh could have painted it this way.
