On 1 July, the 30 June/1 July Committee and For Our Community are organising a Freedom Dinner. It will be an evening of music featuring dishes from African, Surinamese and Caribbean cuisine.

Emancipation and freedom

On 1 July, the day of (legal) emancipation, Suriname celebrates freedom. This day is known by various names in different places. The best-known is the Surinamese term Keti Koti (broken chains), which in Papiamento is translated as Desenkandená (unchained) or, more literally, Kadena Kibrá. Officially, it is called Freedom Day in Suriname and, on the islands, Emancipation Day, or Dia di Emansipashon (Curaçao/Bonaire), Dia di Emancipacion di esclavitud (Aruba) and Emancipation Day (Sint Maarten/Saba/Sint Eustatius).

African, Surinamese and Caribbean cuisine

Whatever we call it, we’re going to celebrate it in style once again. This year, it will take the form of a ‘Freedom Dinner’ at Schouwburg Tilburg (on Schouwburgring), featuring dishes from African, Surinamese and Caribbean cuisine. A proper three-course meal. As well as nourishing the body, we’ll also be nourishing the spirit with ‘letters to the ancestors’.
