The ‘Metropolitan Museum’ opens the new year with the exhibition ‘Psy-City’ by Aja Waalwijk, a cultural jack-of-all-trades from Amsterdam and known as a tireless inspirer of cultural sanctuaries. His mind-blowing landscape descends into the windows on Stedekestraat, where it will cast these dark winter days in an oniric light. Illuminating stardust!

Psy-City

Artist Waalwijk: ‘’Psy-City' (Neue Bauhaus capital of Psi-Topia) is an urban toy¬maquette in constructive demolition. The town consists of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic buildings made of molten plastic, largely sprayed, painted and smeared with fluorescent paint. These ‘Dollhouses of Madness from the Dada Factory’ house (re)constructed toy monstrosities of all types and sizes. The installation is growing and changes shape with each presentation.’

Aja Waalwijk

As a writer, performer, (co-)organiser of cultural events and visual artist, Aja Waalwijk (1952) is associated with De Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam, cultural centre Zaal 100 and artists' village Ruigoord in Amsterdam, among others. He is an active member of the Amsterdam Balloon Company and works as a singer with bands such as Mokumse Zaken, Monkey Fantasies and Tjak. He is also initiator of the annual sculpture route in Ruigoord, the Nomadic Museum and the Futurological Symposium Free Cultural Spaces, which takes place at various locations in Europe. His visual work ranges from paintings, masks, collages and assemblages, to installations and sculptures made of wood.
