For generations, we have passed down the same stories to each other. Myths, fairy tales, folk tales—and also biblical stories such as that of Samson and Delilah. A well-known heroic epic in which Delilah is portrayed as the traitor, while Samson is regarded as the powerful savior of his people.
For generations, we have passed down the same stories to each other. Myths, fairy tales, folk tales—and also biblical stories such as that of Samson and Delilah. A well-known heroic epic in which Delilah is portrayed as the traitor, while Samson is regarded as the powerful savior of his people.
A contemporary look
But what happens if we turn the story around? What if Delilah isn't a traitor, but someone fighting for her freedom? And what if Samson isn't the righteous hero, but an aggressive man driven by ego and possessiveness? Then the perspective shifts and themes such as toxic jealousy, femicide, and blind patriotism come to the fore.
In Samson and (a little bit of) Delilah, the age-old story takes on a contemporary meaning. Theater group Aluin translates it to the present day in an energetic combination of acting, dance, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: a physical struggle in which the classic characters are given a contemporary, modern interpretation.
