Marc Crombach exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum

Exhibition Marc Crombach

The Metropolitan Museum in Tilburg will open a new exhibition by painter Marc Crombach entitled Eyes Wide Open on Friday evening, November 7. The exhibition will run through December 28, 2025. The festive opening will take place on Friday evening, November 7, at 8:00 p.m.

Manga-inspired paintings

Crombach's stylized and colorful paintings are sometimes reminiscent of Japanese comic books, the so-called manga style. He therefore subtitles his work as “adult painting.” What should we understand by this? According to Pablo Picasso, all art is erotic. That seems a little too simplistic to us. The same man also claimed that all art arose from boredom. At first glance, these two statements attributed to him seem somewhat contradictory. Or are they?

In Eyes Wide Open, Crombach explores how we recognize ourselves in others

Back to Crombach, the painter who, in his studio, skillfully paints lovely, dreamlike girls, women who look at you with disarming eyes: “Eyes Wide Open.” Every person forms an image of human appearance, of themselves, but also of others. Crombach: “In part, we also look at others to escape ourselves for a moment.” Naked or not, in the art world, nudes often end up in the niche of ‘erotic art’. A niche in which the painter feels completely out of place: “For me, depicting bodies is as familiar as the presence of houses, trees, and animals.”

If you look closely, you will discover more than what meets the eye at first glance

In any case, we hope you can tell the difference between a house and a naked passerby. Welcome to Marc Crombach's exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum on Stedekestraat in Tilburg.
