We are visiting De Boemel, the theater of cultural entrepreneur Gerard Korthout. He is a versatile artist, a true entertainer, clay artist, creative mind and composer who has elevated people to true art and makes them happy. A remarkable Brabander with a unique theater.
What makes De Boemel special?
Gerard: “Stadstheater De Boemel is a hugely popular place in the Spoorzone. Hip, hot and happy. Not for nothing is it called 'The Bleyemakerij' in the vernacular. This is a special place with a festival and theater atmosphere all year round. What makes De Boemel special are the low-budget drink prices and the low-budget admission price for the public performing arts.”
What do people come here for?
Gerard: “Visitors come for the atmosphere and the program in this piece of Brabant's Berlin. Especially the weekly summer concerts in the urban city garden right behind the station are frequently visited. That organization of the performing arts is in the hands of the Tilburgs Hoop Foundation.”
What makes De Boemel so typically Tilburg?
Gerard: “Nowhere else in Tilburg can such a place with the city's DNA be found. Raw, contrary, social, humorous, experimental and decisive. It is written in large letters on the roof of the Stadstheater and we more than live up to that. This artistic stronghold was born from the hearts and hands of many Tilburgers and is now a colorful part of Tilburg's cultural infrastructure.”
